  • Be present.  Being present means being completely focused on your audience and fully in tune with what is happening between you in the moment.
    • Do you need to adjust your energy level based on the energy in the room and your listeners’ communication style?
    • Are you talking nonstop, or are you pausing to give your listeners a chance to hear and understand your message?
    • Are you typing an email to one client while you’re having a conversation with someone else?

     

    1. Pay attention.Pay close attention to the verbal and nonverbal signals your listeners are sending that indicate you need to adapt your message or delivery.
    • Are they interacting with you or their technical gadgets?
    • Do they need additional information, or do they have a blank stare that indicates you’ve given them too much?
    • Do they truly understand what you are telling them, or are they shaking their heads “yes” in the hopes you will wrap it up soon?

     

    1. Interact to understand. Check in with your listeners and seek feedback by asking open-ended questions that will guide you to know what adjustments you need to make for them.
    • “What are your thoughts on …?”
    • “What has been your experience with …?”
    • “What was your takeaway from our conversation?”
    1. Focus outward rather than inward. Too often our focus is on ourselves and what we want to communicate rather than on our listeners and readers and what they need. Your listeners can tell it’s all about you and what you want to accomplish. Take the focus off yourself, and put your energy into how you can help your listener solve a problem or make a change.

    Influential leaders never focus on what they can get. They focus on what they can give. Make it easy for your listeners to want to listen to you. Put all of your focus on them, what is important to them and what is the best solution for them.

    11 Tips to Stay in Control

     If you have partnered with us, you know we’re on a mission to influence individuals to use PowerPoint to support their message rather than to BE the message.

    PowerPoint slides are NOT your notes.  It’s a visual aid to support and add depth to your message.  It’s your job to present the material you want your listeners to understand and then take action.

    Most presenters design their PowerPoint slides by putting their notes on their slides.  Have you ever asked what your listeners really want?  When you have a PowerPoint slide for every point you present, you invite your listeners to do anything but listen to you.

    I get it; you need to respect your listeners’ request by providing them with the details they requested.  Provide these details in your handouts.  Use your PowerPoint slides to support, add depth to your message and to increase learner retention.

    This month begin editing your PowerPoint decks to stay committed to these tips:

    1. Less is more! Create PowerPoint slides with more pictures and fewer words. Check out Guy Kawasaki.
    2. Ask yourself, “Why am I using this PowerPoint slide?” The answer is for your listener!
    3. Identify how your PowerPoint slide best supports your message based on these criteria:
    • Listeners’ expectations and needs.
    • Listeners’ experience and knowledge level.
    • Program objectives.
    • Time frame.
    • Number of participants and room size.
    1. Design PowerPoint slides around key points and ideas you want your listeners to remember long after your interaction.
    2. BIG, BOLD and BRILLIANT. Big for everyone in your audience to see, no matter what size the room may be. Bold words to increase visibility. Brilliant with generous use of color to keep your listeners’ attention and increase learner retention.
    3. Use simple typefaces that are easy to read: Tahoma, Arial and Helvetica.
    4. Use bullet points to highlight key points and ideas. Limit your bullet points to six per visual, with four or fewer words per bullet.
    5. Use builds when you need to discuss a complicated chart with a lot of information. As you build each segment of the chart, take time to provide an explanation for each segment.  As a result, you will not struggle trying to explain the entire chart at one time.  This method will also make it easier for your listeners to follow and understand.
    6. Save details for handouts!
    7. Stay away from software overkill. If you’re clicking the mouse every few seconds, you’re working too hard.
    8. Always, always have a back-up! You want to be prepared if technology doesn’t cooperate on the day of your BIG presentation, meeting, sales call, face-to-face conversation, etc.
